My Speech Outline

Note: This is a rough draft of my recently assigned speech; Only recently assigned and main points not yet finalized.

• A brief history of Alaska prior to statehood.
  1. Introduction
     • Introduce topic
     • briefly introduce main points
       1. The purchase of Alaska from Russia
       2. The Gold Rush
       3. The Nome Serum Run
     • Transition into main point; possibly with aside about experience in Alaska.
  2. Main Points
     1. The purchase of Alaska from Russia
        • Without giving a full history lesson, I will be mentioning how in the 1860s Russia was in debt.
        • Leaders at the time mocked for purchase saying that the land was worthless; Use as a transition into the gold rush.
        • I will need to make sure to include an oral citation to back up either claim.
     2. The Alaska Gold Rush
        • Peoples minds changed after striking gold.
        • I need to make sure to research more and to include quote or oral citation (or both).
     3. The Nome Serum Run
        • In the early 1900's, Nome experienced an outbreak of diptheria at a horrible time.
        li>This was the event that inspired the Iditarod sled dog race.
        • I could also mention how this event inspired the movie "Balto" if I still need more time.
  3. Conclusion (Still in-progress)
     • I will call back to the Introduction
     • The main points need to be mentioned or referenced in someway.
     • And finish with a send off.
